Sage 300 Reporting with ChatGPT and Claude: Ask Your Data in Plain English

Most Sage 300 "reports" are really one-off questions. Here's how AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT can answer them directly from your Sage data.

Ask anyone who supports a Sage 300 company and they’ll tell you the same thing: most report requests aren’t really reports. They’re questions. “How many of these can we still sell?” “When did this customer’s order ship, and what’s the tracking number?” “What did we sell in this category last month?” Each one means opening the right screen, writing a query or waiting for whoever knows Crystal Reports.

AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT are very good at turning a question into the right lookup, if they can reach your data safely.

How it works: the Model Context Protocol

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use tools provided by another system. Metabox MCP is a set of Sage 300 tools the assistant can call. You ask a question in plain English; the assistant decides which lookup answers it, runs it against your Sage 300 company and replies in plain language.

What you can ask

  • Customers: addresses, terms, credit limit and balance, ship-to addresses and open orders.
  • Orders: a customer’s orders with status, PO number, total and lines still owed.
  • Stock: on hand, committed, available and on purchase order at each location.
  • Shipments: status, Ship Via and tracking, found by shipment, order, customer or tracking number.
  • Sales: net sales by day, month, customer, item, category, salesperson or location.
  • Documents: invoices, order confirmations, credit notes and picking slips as PDFs.

Numbers you can trust

A good AI connection has to understand Sage 300, not just read tables. Metabox MCP counts sales from posted invoices minus credit notes, not from orders, and treats available stock as on hand minus committed. Before a custom query runs, it checks a built-in Sage 300 data dictionary so it uses the right tables and fields.

Safe by design

Metabox MCP is read-only: it can’t change anything in Sage 300. Changes still happen in Metabox or in Sage itself.

Lightweight to set up

Metabox MCP is a light installation on your own server with a step-by-step guide. There’s no onboarding project or training: once it’s connected, your team just asks Sage questions. Learn more on the Metabox MCP page or book a demo.
