Sage 300 Warehouse Management Without a Separate WMS

A full WMS is a big project. Many Sage 300 warehouses only need the floor-level pieces: picking, packing, shipping, bins and labels, working directly in Sage.

When a Sage 300 warehouse grows, the usual advice is “you need a WMS”. A full warehouse management system can be the right answer, but it’s also a large project: a second database, interfaces to keep in sync, new hardware, and weeks of training.

Many warehouses don’t need all of that. They need the floor-level jobs to be faster and more accurate, while Sage 300 stays the system of record.

What most Sage 300 warehouses actually need

  • Picking that’s paperless, prioritized and checked by scan.
  • Packing and shipping with verified boxes, live carrier rates and labels.
  • Inventory visibility: what’s on hand, committed and on order, and which bin it’s in.
  • Labels for anything that arrives without a barcode.
  • Nothing to reconcile: every action written straight into Sage 300.

The modular approach

Metabox is a set of mobile apps that each handle one of those jobs and work directly with Sage 300 through Orchid Extender. You can start with one module and add others later.

  • Metabox Orders: orders group automatically on a live board sorted by priority (RUSH, PICKUP, standard), and each line is picked by scan. Reserved stock (zNext) stays hidden until a matching order is picked.
  • Metabox Shipments: boxing, palletization, rate shopping across 100+ carriers through EasyPost, Zebra labels and posting back to O/E Shipments.
  • Metabox Inventory: live stock search, bin locations by scan, item weights and photos, and barcode labels from POs and receipts.
  • Metabox POS: counter sales backed by Sage 300 AR and Order Entry.

Why this is lighter than a WMS

  • No second database. Metabox works directly with Sage 300, so there’s nothing to sync overnight.
  • Browser-based. Deploy once on your own server; every handheld, tablet or PC just opens a URL.
  • Short training. Scan-first screens with few steps per task, so new staff can work on their first shift.
  • Published pricing. Each module is priced per location with unlimited users. See pricing.

Is a full WMS ever the better choice?

If you run complex multi-warehouse wave picking, slotting optimization or automation such as conveyors, a dedicated WMS may be worth it. If your main problems are picking errors, slow shipping and not knowing where stock is, a lighter mobile layer on Sage 300 usually gets you there faster. Book a demo and we’ll tell you honestly which side of that line you’re on.
