Sage 300 is a strong accounting and distribution system, but its screens were designed for a desk. On the warehouse floor, people still pick from paper, check items by eye and walk back to a PC to update Sage. Barcode scanning fixes that, as long as the scans go straight into Sage 300.
Where scanning makes the biggest difference
- Picking. Scanning each item against the order line catches wrong items and wrong quantities before they leave the shelf.
- Packing. A second scan at the pack bench confirms the right items went into the right box. This is the check that started Metabox at Buffa Distribution.
- Bin locations. Scanning the item and then the bin is the fastest way to record where stock lives.
- Receiving and labelling. Items without a barcode can be labelled as they arrive, so every later scan works.
What to look for in a scanning solution
- No second database. Scans should update Sage 300 directly, not a separate system that has to sync.
- Browser-based. If the app runs in a browser, there’s nothing to install or update on each handheld.
- Built for the handheld. Large buttons and scan-first screens matter when people wear gloves and work fast.
- Label printing. You need to print barcodes yourself, not just read them.
How Metabox handles barcode scanning
Every Metabox module is scan-first and runs in a browser on Android handhelds such as the Zebra TC52, or on a tablet or PC when that’s easier.
- Metabox Orders puts a live, priority-sorted picking board on the floor. Each line is picked by scan against the committed quantity, and barcodes can be printed during the pick.
- Metabox Shipments adds items to the shipment by scan and assigns them to boxes, so packing is verified before the label prints.
- Metabox Inventory lets staff scan an item, then scan a bin to assign it, and generates UPC labels for items from a purchase order, PO receipt, return authorization or sales order.
Getting started
Most teams start with the step where errors cost the most. For many, that’s packing and shipping. Read about scan-validated picking and inventory and labelling, or book a demo to see scanning on your own floor.
